Hello! Keystone / Lenawee owner here. Our board explored solar panel installation a couple years ago (around 2021) and we did not find it attractive at the time. The rebates and cost incentives covered a small percentage of total cost, leaving the rest to the association. The solar company provided estimated returns (savings on electricity), which seemed to just take the actual cost and spread it out across 15 years, not really a careful analysis of potential savings. Also, installation on the roof would void our roof warranty, and we were unsure if the volume of snow in winter months would make the panels less effective.

That said, I'd appreciate information about successful solar installations in Summit County which could be used as a close example for us. We would still be interested if we can see better positive returns.

The Estates at the Alders has explored solar panels and there are negatives to consider, in particular shade, lack of sunlight for some townhomes, snow buildup and hindered roofing access for maintenance and removal, and roof/shingle replacement. There is, however, an alternative: community solar gardens with sponsorship from Excel energy. This alternative approach was discussed in the SummitDaily in an article entitled: Ask Eartha: What are options for solar in Summit County? It's very easy and Summit County has a rebate program too. Just look at Solarize Summit. I did it and was great, fast, and completely pain free with Xcel.

Question from Donald Fuerst - Northstar

Recent changes in tax law have made it possible to obtain solar energy tax credits for second homes. Some of our homeowners have expressed interest in adding solar energy panels to our HOA. Have any other HOAs recently explored adding solar energy? We are particularly interested in finding good contractors, working with Excel Energy and how effective this is in producing cost savings.
