Does your HOA prohibit or limit gas grills and/or fire tables on decks/patios?

    Hi Joan,

We do not have a policy on gas grills or fire tables. At the time we looked at the subject, the county also had no prohibition on their use. If you find the county has now changed I would appreciate an update.

Yes, our HOA only allows propane grills (or electric) on individual decks/patios and restricts any other type of open flame/fires  on unit patios (we specifically restrict charcoal grills, fire pits, fire tables, outdoor heaters or any other device with an open flame or exposed coils).   Feel free to shoot me an email if you'd like to see our specific wording in our Rules & Regulations.

Due to the dange of fire, no open fires are allowed on our property.  Only propane or electric grills with covers are allows on decks, patios and balconies.  Charcoal grills, fire tables, outdoor heaters of any kind or any other device with an open flam or exposed coils are prohibited and will be removed.

Propane tanks must be store on decks, balconies or patios.  They may never be stored inside of the buildings.

We do check the decks, patios and balconies regularly and remind our Owners regularly.

At chateaux we have two timers.  One is remote and turns on the gas to the grill from 10am until 10pM.  The other timer is at the grill and can be selected for up to 45 minutes.

    Joan:

Our HOA does not allow for charcoal grills on our decks due to the open flame.  Along those lines we also do not allow for fire pits, even though they may have the screen, as sparks can still fly and we are in a relatively high risk fire area.

Regarding grills, we allow for gas and wood pellet grills.  One concern I have but we have not addressed is having the gas grills hooked up to the natural gas lines.  My concern is that if the grill are not secured and it is windy, the grill can get blown around and possibly break the line resulting in a gas leak.

Lenawee received a notice this year that all open flame (gas) grills must be removed and prohibited from decks by the end of 2024, in order to retain insurance coverage. Electric grills are still allowed.

    Joan:

Our HOA does not, at this time, any open flame on our decks.  The only grills we allow are either gas or a wood pellet (Traeger) grill.  We have natural gas and there are some people that tap into this to feed their grills.  This is something I'm keeping an eye on for fear that the gas line may get compromised.  Obviously no fire tables.  FYI, as the county may not have any regulations, these may eventually come from insurance companies placing the ban for insurance reasons and only allow grills on a ground based patio or driveway.  So check with your insuyrance company as well.
