Question from Gretchen Davis - President, The Pines

Do any HOA's have any policies related to e-bikes.  We discovered two e-bikes on the side of one of our buildings with an extension cord going up to the 2nd floor and are curious if any HOA's have policies to storage or charging of e-bikes.

    from Curtis Audin, Frey Gulch

Frey Gulch does not have a policy. Our units are townhomes with garage. One owner has e-bikes but they keep and charge them in their garage. A thought I have is have the owners of the ebikes remove the batteries from the bikes and charge them inside their respective units. The question then becomes bike storage.

Most e-bikes have removable batteries so should be able to be charged in the owner's unit.  A few do not have removable batteries.  At least whoever ran a long cord was using their own electricity, though the amount used to charge a bike battery should be nominal.   At The Seasons we do not have a policy and so far haven't seen the need for one.  Maybe ask e-bike owners to charge their batteries inside their units or, if they cannot, maybe there is an outlet available at a common building?  Add a bike rack for that purpose?

What concerns me about your description of the e-bike battery charging is that the amount of time the cable may have been connected to the battery. If connected overnight, the e-bake's battery charging could have been a fire hazard. Please review the following NPR article: What's driving the battery fires with e-bikes and scooters?  [https://www.npr.org/2023/03/11/1162732820/e-bike-scooter-lithium-ion-battery-fires]

The following is the safety recommendations from the article: The main recommendation that comes from both the CPSC and the FDNY is to be present while you're charging your device, and to not charge it while you're sleeping. Unplug the device once it is fully charged.
